When? In September, during the grape picking season.
Why? Because it's my father's home town, where I spent my childhood holidays.
Best local restaurant? "Zé da Calçada" and for snacks, "Confeitaria Lailai".
Best typical dish / snack from the region? Roast kid and the convent sweets.
What typical souvenir can one buy? Vinho verde (wine) from the region and the famous "quilhõezinhos", a phallic sweet in honour of São Gonçalo.
What is there to see / do / try? Walk across the São Gonçalo Bridge, visit the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso National Museum, and play a round of golf in the Amarante course.
A curiosity? The writer Agustina Bessa-Luís was born in Vila Meã, a parish in the municipality of Amarante, and Amarante is the birthplace of the great poet Teixeira de Pascoaes.
